What is a Bone Mineral Densitometry Scan?

Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD), also commonly known as a DEXA scan, is a specialised imaging test used to measure bone density and assess bone strength. It helps identify bone loss and determine your risk of fractures or conditions such as osteoporosis.

DEXA technology uses a very small, low-dose beam of radiation to safely and accurately assess bone density.

Preparing for Your Scan

Please bring the following to your appointment:

• Your referral from your medical practitioner
• Medicare card and any relevant concession or health care cards
• Any previous imaging or reports related to the area being scanned

No special preparation is required for a BMD scan.

As metal can interfere with imaging, we recommend wearing light, comfortable clothing without metal fasteners such as zips, buttons, clips or hooks around the area being examined. You may also be asked to remove jewellery, watches, hair clips or other metal accessories. If needed, our staff can provide a disposable gown.

Please inform our staff if you are, or may be, pregnant prior to your appointment.

During the Scan

All BMD studies at Marina Radiology are performed by experienced, nationally accredited radiographers.


The scan typically takes between 10–20 minutes. During the examination, you may be asked to lie or sit in different positions while the radiographer obtains images. Remaining still during the scan helps ensure the highest quality results.

  • No. A BMD scan is completely painless and similar to having a photograph taken.

  • BMD scans use a very low dose of radiation. At Marina Radiology, all equipment is designed to minimise radiation exposure while maintaining high-quality imaging.

  • If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, please inform both your doctor and our staff prior to the scan. Your doctor will determine whether the examination is appropriate.

  • No. There are no known after-effects from a BMD scan and you can resume normal activities immediately afterwards.

  • Your radiographer’s role is to perform the scan and produce high-quality images for interpretation. Your results will be reviewed by a specialist radiologist and discussed with you by your referring practitioner.
